The Lichte's New Farmhouse...... Week 36

Week 36 - about 4 days late. It's been a busy busy week. AND Some of these pictures are "technically" from week 37 but it's all stuff I couldn't wait to share with you.

Siding on the house is all complete. They are finishing wrapping some of the exterior wood and hopefully soon I will have front porch columns. I'm really excited for the difference that it makes.

And shutters will hopefully be on soon too.

Even getting a little pair of shutters for that tiny window up there.

The trim carpenter is DONE. That whole process was maybe the most fun and transforming, but I think I say that when everything is finished. The complete attention to detail is amazing. Way back when I was going to cut on some trim for budget reasons. I am SO glad that I didn't because trim can really make or break a room much less a whole home.

Trim goes so beyond baseboards and doorway trim. It's staircases, closets, pantries. I had no idea all of the decisions I would have to make when I set out on the trim part of building a home. I thought I was ready, I thought I was prepared and I was overwhelmed. BUT with a great builder there to guide you every step and make sure you are getting what you want all of the contractors doing the same it makes most of it a lot less stressful and overwhelming. I'm jumping off track a little bit I know, but the importance of a good person building a home that you hope will be around in 100+ years goes beyond any small town politics that you will come across. Unfortunately that is something that my farmer and I have encountered in the past week - but life goes on and IF ANYTHING - it just reiterates to us that we made the right decision.

I am not going to spend any more time talking about anything other than all of the lovely things that are going on at the house.... Back to trim work.

This view from the back of the house, that staircase... it's pretty perfect.

All of the balusters will be painted white (Benjamin Moore White Dove) as well as the risers, but the handrail and the treads are made of maple and will be strained a dark cherry (ish)....

The view from the front of the house....

I know I shared this last week but it's my new favorite part of the house.... It's really even more gorgeous in person.

I also had this paneling done in the 1/2 bath that is in the back hallway. It will be painted white and the top will be wallpapered white and light grey toile. I am excited for this little room.

Closets and pantries all have shelves and great hanging set ups. The photos are very grainy.

I had a custom 1/2 glass door ordered for my farmers office. It's too hard to see what it says with the plastic wrap still covering it but it says "Lichte Family Farms" and below it is a beautiful barn and silo scene.

The kitchen really is the center of most homes. The places where everyone gathers around, so it was important for me to think about most everything when designing them. I know I mentioned them in an earlier post, but Prestige Cabinets out of Centerview did all of our cabinets. We have really had a great experience, so if anyone is remodeling I would definitely recommend them.

This is one wall. Starting at the far left is the hutch and those doors will be glass. Its open shelving above and the lower part has two big drawers. The top one will hopefully house our everyday dishes. The middle part is where the stove goes. It's a slide in range and will have an oven below it. The leg details on either side of the stove is so pretty. SUCH an inexpensive add to really dress up your cabinets. To the right of that is for the refrigerator and on the end is the pantry. We don't have the door yet, but it is being made to look like cabinets. I believe the bottom will look like three drawers and the top will look like a cabinet but it opens to a door. I'm excited to see that come together and get installed - hopefully soon...

The other wall of the kitchen (which is to the right of the cabinets we just went over - with a doorway in between)... Starting at the left we have a base cabinet, in the middle is my "appliance garage". We are missing the doors but they do slide in after they are opened and the whole cabinet will sit on the countertop. It will house a microwave, coffee pot, toaster, blender, etc.... All of those things that you use everyday but without anything have to sit out on the counter because with such a huge island we actually have very little counter space - which is fine by me. O also have the cabinet "legs" on this piece as well as "feet" at the very bottom of all of my cabinets.  ....Then on the very end is a double wall oven. Yes, you counted that right - I have three ovens. I like to bake. A lot. So to my farmer who is reading this, I promise to not buy a lot of new shoes and I promise to do a lot of baking. Such a small sacrifice for such a beautiful home.

* I will also point out that we are waiting on crown molding for the top of the cabinets... *

Week 36 was also all about tile... Our upstairs bathroom got tiled. it's a poor poor photo because of the light and it makes these tiles look creamy when in reality they are bright white with bright white grout. It's a glazed ceramic tile that we found at Home Depot for very inexpensive. I knew that we wanted to spend a majority of the tile budget in the main floor of the house so we did cut on the "kids" bathroom since I assume for the first several years it will just be piled with rubber duckies, baby powder and water splashes.

This is he upstairs bathtub/shower which will be tiled a white subway tile.

This is the master shower. We have two little niches that will have the same pattern as the floor (marble basket weave).

WOW - that ended up being a long post. I am four days late in writing this so I was going to breeze through it but after seeing the pictures again I got a little inspired to share more.

Week 36 also came with some exciting personal news. My brother and sister in law welcomed their 4th child. A sweet, beautiful baby boy named Hudson William. I have lots of Easter pictures and several of that sweet new baby that I plan to post this weekend.

The Lichte's New Farmhouse..... Week 35

Seriously... Look at that big, blue, beautiful sky..... Week 35 was full of so many exciting things. I see it all come together a little more everyday. Lots of trim - lots of siding.

I can't wait to see the black shutters on the windows. Everything is all white and I really think the shutters are going to make a big difference.

The headers of the trim are on - it really does just make the doorways and windows stand out.

This banister and this staircase is the ONE reason we built a 2 story home. It sounds silly to say it and even more silly to type it out - but it's true...

Check out that volute -  I have one on the left and one on the right side. They will be stained a dark cherry color.

They have also started working on the library panel wainscoting that will go up the stairs.

The kitchen doorway has a transom glass in the top.

In the master bathroom shower - we will have it all tiled. The square inserts along with the shower floor will be a marble basket weave.

Isn't this a beautiful piece of stone...

In addition to the shower floor and square inserts, I plan to do a design on the middle of the floor like the one.

AND.... Maybe my favorite view of the whole house. Coming through the garage door to the back "mudroom" of the house you see this - the long hall into the living room and parts of that staircase. I see our whole life in the hallway. Different stages - babies running around in a diaper, older kids running out of the door running late, kids coming home for college but leaving all to quickly... I see stuff like that in most every room of this house.

Lots of people build homes every single day, but with this home and these rooms I have envisioned Christmas Mornings, Easter Egg Hunts, Saturday Morning Pancakes, The best of times and the hardest of times will all happen within these walls. They'll be good and they will be beautiful.

So whether you are building a new home or not - I sure hope you see great things in your hallways too.

The Lichte's New Farmhouse.... Week 34

Week 34... CABINETS and TRIM....

Almost half of our cabinets got installed last week. To say that it was fun is a complete understatement. Cabinets are a big deal, I have put ALOT of thought into each and every piece. So to see it come together like this is rewarding.

This is the back mudroom. That door to the right of the built in lockers goes to the garage. These lockers will be painted white and have antique brass pulls and hooks. Baskets will go in the very top cubby and possibly the very bottom one on the floor too.

The Laundry Room....

I have double sconces that will go on each side of the window. An old sink from my farmers grandparents house will be directly under the window. Hopefully the big drawers to the right will house some table linens.

And the is my little desk that is in the laundry room. Let's face it - most of the time it will have folded laundry on top of it, but there is a piece to the far left that pulls all the way out and I will be able to sew/craft. It will be painted white but the top will be stained.

The washing machine will go to the left, there is laundry basket storage in the middle and the dryer will go to the right. The middle section above is open shelving. I am picturing little jars of clothespins, but in reality I am sure it will be a catch all for change, lent, etc.... I can have high hopes though - right...

The Living Room... I think I was the most worried about how this piece would turn out. I knew what I wanted, but had a very hard time really describing it. Well - when I walked in and saw this piece. I may have cried (happy tears).. There will be adjustable shelves in all four of the sections and it too will be painted white. At one point I was worried about he arch in the top, I was debating weather it would be a timeless piece or if it would date pretty quickly. After seeing it - I love the softness that it gives this room.

My farmers office.... It's not quite put together yet, so you will have to tune in to Week 35 for more of that.

And.. One of my favorite things on this whole house - the built in bookcases and bench in the upstairs front bedroom. I told my farmer that I am going to go ahead and paint this room pink because a little girl needs to live in this room. Isn't it the sweetest? These will be painted white and I will have glass pills and knobs.

The upstairs Jack/Jill bathroom vanities. They, too will be painted white.

And in that bathroom we have a built in floor to ceiling linen closet. The bottom will be pull out hampers.

hamper drawers -

That's it for cabinets as of now.. My farmers office should be put together this next week and hopefully the kitchen and 1/2 bath will come later on this week. I can't wait to see the rest.

My tile guy put in concrete flooring for the parts of the house that will have tile (the laundry room, master bath and upstairs bath.)

Our trim also got started last week. So far its just the baseboards and trim around the doors. It will all be painted white. It's a fairly traditional style trim. Very similar to what is in my parents home (which is over 100 years old)...

It will end up looking something like this...

For the outside, in addition to putting on some more siding we also got our porch ceilings primed.

Remember they will be painted a pale blue like in this photo...

We are 34 weeks into building this home - and maybe 10 weeks left to go.... It's been such a roller coaster of feelings and emotions so far. Lots of fun, exciting times, quickly followed by stressful times. Money, time, more money and more time, seems like all its been.

I had a little moment Saturday morning early. Coffee in hand I grabbed my mud boots (hello spring on the farm) and headed for the new house. And there I was - walking around, looking at cabinets and trim and wood floors, drinking coffee in my house. A house that in a few short weeks (or 10) I will be  in. So while I have had many moments where I have been very stressed, angry, impatient, bummed (you name it I have felt it in this journey) and let's be honest, I am sure to still feel some of these things again in the next 10 weeks. But I took a moment and remembered what this felt like. Just me and my farmer, and for a little bit longer a much more simple life. These days that we are having now won't ever happen again. So while I spend most everyday wishing I was in my new house - I am going to do my best to cherish the ones I have left here with my farmer.
