The Original Farmhouse Sink

When we started building our house almost three years ago I knew that I wanted to incorporate older pieces into our new home. Even though the walls, windows and floors were going to be brand new I wanted it to feel as if it's been on the farm for 100 years...

I added little touches like a transom glass in my kitchen doorway, wallpaper in the hallways bath and big, thick, old style trim throughout the home. Adding all of these certainly helps make the heart of my home feel much older than just three years. My Farmhouse is an old soul - sort of like me. ;)

My farmer has this wonderful office at the front of the house with custom cabinets and a nice desk, large canvas' of the farm fill the walls. I knew he needed a space that was his, and let's be honest, a place where he could throw his mail and I could close the door to keep from losing my ever loving mind. My "office" naturally is in the laundry room (don't feel too bad for me yet, it's a pretty great laundry room) A little built in desk where I can sew, craft, pay some bills, drop some mail, etc. It's a great little room, and I always get so many compliments on it.

                                   

When "designing" the laundry room I wanted a very mature look. I didn't want blank white shelves with brightly colored accessories. I wanted warm, easy and cozy.









Absolutely the focal point of this room is the old farmhouse sink. They are all the new rage. I knew I wanted one for our Laundry room, I just didn't know it was sitting in a shed on the farm. When my father in law showed me this sink in his shed I fell in love.

It was beautiful, it had a great story, it was in good shape.... it was perfect. (this photo was taken after we had it re sandblasted)

I keep the décor of my home fairly simple. In the fall I add some pumpkins around, the summertime gets flags, and the spring is usually fresh spring flowers. For Christmastime it's usually fresh greenery.

I grew up looking through my moms Southern Living magazines, and dreaming of decorating my own house even when I was just a little girl.  So in a way decorating has always came very easy to me. I was not one of those kids who wanted posters of boy bands or movies on their walls, I loved my wallpaper with little purple violets all over it. But decorating isn't that way for everyone. Or sometimes maybe you just need little help or inspiration.  I'm guilty of it too, but a lot of times we add too many things in our home that are "trendy" and not a true reflection of ourselves. I love the "legs" to the cabinets, it makes it look like an old piece of furniture.

The antiqued brass fixtures were a tad over budget, but were also perfect for this sink.

When designing our home I searched magazines and the internet for ideas almost daily - It took a whole year for us to build and I spent every spare second I had on this home. Making it what we want, making it a true reflection of us and our future generations. if you are in the process of building or remodeling, I do reccomend you check out Havenly - I will certainly reference it when I get questions about my home decor.

There are so many wonderful things and pieces for our home that we have gotten over the years. But this sink, Grandma Lichte's sink.... will always be our favorite. It's where she washed her hair, and where grandpa warmed up the livestock medicine. It's where I water my indoor flowers and where my farmer puts his clothes that need stain treated. Someday we will wash babies and grand babies in this sink. I'll tirelessly look out he window while I'm scrubbing grass stains out of little boys clothes, or carrots off of baby bibs. The sink is beautiful and it's trendy, it fits nicely and it's useful. That stuff doesn't matter. How I use my sink matters. The things that happen around this sink matter. They matter to us and they will matter to them.
